Using Physical Activity to Support Recovery from Gambling Addiction

Bet on Sport is an international project that addresses the growing issue of sports and gambling addiction by exploring the positive role of physical activity in recovery. The project promotes the inclusion of people experiencing gambling addiction in sports and movement-based programs as a pathway to improved mental and physical well-being.

The project brings together partners from Romania, Spain, Bulgaria, Greece, Finland, Italy, and Turkey.

What We Aim to Do

Bet on Sport seeks to:

  • Promote sports participation among people recovering from gambling addiction
  • Train at least 200 professionals in addiction treatment, health, and sports to co-design and deliver recovery-focused physical activity programs
  • Facilitate collaboration between over 100 health, addiction, and sports professionals across sectors
  • Raise awareness among more than 400 professionals, stakeholders, and authorities about the value of sport as a therapeutic tool
  • Provide access to physical activity for at least 100 people recovering from gambling addiction

Our Approach

To reach these goals, Bet on Sport will:

  • Analyze the support needs of individuals with gambling addiction, with a focus on sports-based recovery strategies
  • Identify effective types of sport activities to support recovery
  • Assess the training needs of professionals working in health, addiction, and sport sectors
  • Develop a Cooperation Protocol for cross-sector collaboration
  • Deliver a free online training course for professionals in all seven partner countries
  • Pilot and evaluate new sport-based recovery programs at the national level
  • Disseminate results and tools through print, digital, and social media channels

The project includes a broad awareness-raising campaign through:

  • Printed and digital materials
  • A multilingual website
  • Social media campaigns
  • Public events in all participating countries

Sosped’s Role in the Project

As a Finnish partner, Sosped Foundation brings deep experience in peer support, gambling harm prevention, and participatory service development. Our role focuses on contributing to training content, co-developing recovery models, and piloting inclusive sport-based activities together with Finnish professionals and peer experts.
